5th grade genres worksheets
Fifth grade genre worksheets add the kinds that borrow from truth: a legend built on a real flood, a biography of a real fossil hunter, historical fiction that walks an invented girl through a real building in 1907. Questions ask for the genre, the clue, and the feature that separates a text from its nearest neighbor.

What's on a 5th grade sheet
5th grade sheets draw from 13 passages, 291 to 312 words long. 5th and 6th grade print from the same 13 passages. What changes is the standard (RL.5.5 here) and the teaching notes below. None of these passages are on 4th grade sheets. On 4th grade sheets they run 143 to 164 words.
Some of the titles: Why the Sea Breathes Twice a Day, The Lantern at Harrow Bend, The Map That Would Not Hold Still, Put a Clock on Homework, Dome Seven, Read to Us, Please.
- Reading passage. Read the passage. Then circle the letter of the best answer for each question. One passage per sheet, with its own question set.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
How to teach this
Ask what is checkable. A biography and a legend can both start with a real name and a real year; the difference is that one sticks to what records show and the other repeats what people say. Have your child sort the sentences of a passage into "could be checked" and "grew in the telling."
Watch for: Fiction versus nonfiction is only the first sort. The real skill is the next level down: a myth and a science text can cover the same river, and the difference is how each one explains it. Kids match genres by topic instead of by clues. Space means science fiction to them, even when the text is a fact article about astronauts. The clue questions exist to break that habit.
Common questions about 5th grade genres
- What is the difference between a legend and historical fiction?
- Both sit on real history. A legend is a story a community has told and retold about a real person or event until the deeds outgrew the records. Historical fiction is one writer's invention, with made-up characters placed carefully inside a true time. Fifth graders learn to spot the difference by asking who is telling and whether the facts could be checked.
- Are the biographies on these sheets about real people?
- Yes. Every biography passage is about a real person and sticks to what the records support. The invented passages are always fiction, and the questions ask your child to tell which is which from the text itself.
