First graders write their name smaller and steadier, and many start on cursive at home. The same sheet prints the name in manuscript print or in school cursive, on the same guides, so the letters they know in one style can be traced in the other.

Name tracing in cursive

The same name sheet in joined cursive, with its own page of tips for a child writing their name in cursive for the first time.

The kind of words you'll practice

Trace your name on each line. Then write it yourself.

Each word appears twice in light gray for tracing, then once as a blank line for writing it without help.

The sheet is built from the name you type, so the same name always prints the same page. Leave the box empty and each print picks a name for you.

What's on a 1st grade sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

Once the print name is automatic, switch the style to cursive for one row and keep the rest in print. Cursive capitals look nothing like their print shapes, so let the child find their own initial on the cursive alphabet chart first.

Watch for: Tracing over the dots is the start, not the finish. The sheet leaves the rest of each line empty on purpose: the name written alone, from the traced model, is the practice that sticks. Copy the capitals the model shows. Most names have one capital at the start (Maya), some have more (Mary Jane, O'Neil), and the rest are small letters. A name written in all capitals is easier to draw and harder to read; from the second row on, steer the pencil to the small letters.

Common questions about 1st grade name tracing generator

Print or cursive?
Print until it is automatic, then cursive. Both use the same guides, so a child can trace their name in cursive on one row and in print on the next.
Can I print a surname or two names?
Yes, anything up to 24 characters. A long name prints one outline per row instead of two, so there is still room to write it alone.
