The kind of words you'll practice
Trace each word two times. Then write it yourself on the line.
SundayMondayTuesdayWednesdayThursdayFridaySaturday
Each word appears twice in light gray for tracing, then once as a blank line for writing it without help.
The words print in the order they come on a calendar, 7 to a sheet. Each print picks a starting point and carries on from there, going back to the first one after the last, so the order gets practice from anywhere in the list.
What's on a 1st grade sheet
1st grade sheets use all 7 words every time, in a new order. Kindergarten and 1st grade print from the same 7 words. What changes is the standard (L.1.2.a here) and the teaching notes below. Kindergarten sheets print 6 to a page.
- Tracing. Trace each word two times. Then write it yourself on the line. 7 words per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with a word list on the last page.
How to teach this
Have your child say the day out loud, trace it twice, then cover the traced copies and write it from memory on the rest of the line. Check the capital on every row. Then ask a calendar question that uses the sheet, like "what day is it today?" or "what day was yesterday?", and have them find and copy the answer. Each print picks its own starting day, so the order gets practice from the middle of the week too.
Watch for: A lowercase first letter is the mistake to watch for. Children write monday because they hear it as an ordinary word. Point to the capital on the traced copy before your child writes their own. The day names are long for small hands, and Wednesday is the one most often misspelled, because its first d is silent. Say it the way it is spelled, Wed-nes-day, while writing it.
Common questions about 1st grade days of the week
- Why do the days of the week start with a capital letter?
- Because each day is a name, a proper noun, and names start with a capital. Capitalizing dates is part of the 1st grade standards (L.1.2.a), and writing the days on these sheets practices it every row.
- How do I help my child remember the order of the days?
- Sing or chant them every morning, then use the sheet. It prints all seven days in order, but the week can start on any day, so your child has to know what comes next, not only what comes after Sunday.
