How to teach this
Most schools teach cursive in 2nd or 3rd grade, but a name is often the first thing a child wants to write in it. Find the capital on a cursive alphabet chart first, because cursive capitals look nothing like their print shapes. Trace slowly and keep the pencil on the paper through each join, lifting only where the model has a gap. Small letters start on the baseline and swing up. One row a day for a week works better than a full page at once.
Watch for: Lifting the pencil after every letter. The letters of a cursive name join, so the pencil stays down from one letter to the next. Writing the capital in print. Cursive capitals have their own shapes; trace the model's capital, even if it looks strange at first. Starting small letters at the top, the way print does. In cursive most small letters start on the baseline and swing up into the letter.
Common questions about cursive name tracing
- How do I make a cursive name tracing sheet?
- Type the name in the box and press print. The sheet comes out in joined cursive, with dotted copies to trace on each row and room to write the name alone.
- Is 1st grade too early for cursive?
- Most schools start cursive in 2nd or 3rd grade. Many children still want to see and trace their own name in cursive sooner, and a name is short enough to learn letter by letter.
- Can I print the name in print letters instead?
- Yes. The name tracing generator page prints the same sheet in print letters, or in cursive if you pick it.
