The kind of words you'll practice

Trace each letter two times. Then write it yourself on the line.

How to teach this

Mix letter practice into real writing: after tracing, have your first grader write one word that uses the letter (m, then mom). If reversals linger (b and d are famous), anchor them in a word your child can picture: b has a bat before the ball, d has a drum after the stick.

Watch for: Neat is not the goal; consistent is. A wobbly letter that starts at the top and sits on the line beats a pretty one drawn bottom-up. Capital and lowercase are different jobs, not big and small versions of the same shape: A and a share a name and little else.

Common questions about printing letters

My first grader still reverses b and d. Should I worry?
Reversals are developmentally normal well into first grade and often beyond. Handle them with memory hooks, not alarm: the word bed starts with b and ends with d, and the word itself is shaped like a bed. Daily exposure plus a calm hook beats drilling.
When does handwriting speed matter?
Later than most people think. In first grade, consistent formation is the whole game; speed grows out of it in second and third grade. A child who forms letters the same way every time will speed up on their own; a fast scribbler has more to unlearn.
