3rd grade Core grade
Mixed operations word problems put all four operations on one page: a joining story, then equal groups, then a compare, with fact-range numbers throughout (3.OA.A.3, 3.NBT.A.2). Each problem takes a single step. The skill being trained is the decision, because no sign is printed and no pattern repeats down the page.

In fourth grade the mix keeps the decision-making and raises the arithmetic: multi-digit addition and subtraction alongside multiplication and division facts. Still one step per story. A child who can already compute all four ways learns here to tell, from the prose alone, which one the situation calls for.

5th grade
Word problems for grade 5 mix all four operations at full strength: multi-digit sums and differences, two-digit multiplication, division with remainders to interpret. Teachers lean on pages like this before tests, because story problems reveal in minutes which operation a child avoids or confuses.
