R-controlled air and ear sounds worksheets

Each print is a different sheet with its own answer key. You don't need to sign up.

R bends the vowel in front of it. Air, are, and ear can all say the air sound (chair, care, bear); eer, ere, and ear can say the ear sound (deer, here, hear).

Two grades, one set of words: both print from the same 30. Print one here, or open a grade for examples and teaching notes.

Print by grade

  1. 1st grade

    Examples and teaching notes

The air sound (chair, care, bear) and the ear sound (deer, here, fear) are r-controlled cousins with overlapping spellings. First graders sort by sound, training the ear past the tricky spellings.

  2. 2nd grade Core grade

    Examples and teaching notes

Each print is a different sheet with its own answer key. You don't need to sign up.

Second graders sort quickly, handle the two-faced ear spelling (bear vs. hear), and read new air/ear words by sound-checking instead of letter-guessing.
