  1. Preschool Core grade

Each print is a different sheet with its own answer key. You don't need to sign up.

Beginning sounds are the first listening skill on the way to reading: say a picture's name and hear the sound it starts with. On this sheet a three or four year old says the word, hears the first sound, and writes its letter on the line, six pictures to a page in big type.

  2. Kindergarten

    Examples and teaching notes

Beginning sounds are where phonics starts: hearing the first sound in a word and matching it to a letter. Each picture on this sheet is a short-vowel word with its first letter missing, and the child writes the letter that makes the sound they hear at the front.

  3. 1st grade

    Examples and teaching notes

First graders isolate the first sound in a word quickly and write its letter without help. This sheet keeps the practice honest: the picture gives the word, the missing letter is the first sound, and every sheet draws a fresh set of pictures with different first sounds.
