Free printable PDF worksheet, aligned to Common Core RF.2.3.

Each print is a different sheet with its own answer key. You don't need to sign up.

The kind of words you'll sort

Write each word from the bank in the correct column.

aircaresquaresneerdearbeardherefair

Columns: sounds like air and sounds like ear. "care" belongs under sounds like air; "sneer" belongs under sounds like ear.

Every print pulls a new set of words at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling gets a different mix.

What's on a 2nd grade sheet

2nd grade sheets draw from 30 words, 14 to a page. 1st and 2nd grade print from the same 30 words. What changes is the standard (RF.2.3 here) and the teaching notes below. 1st grade sheets print 10 to a page.

Some of the words:

pairstairdarestarewearsparesteerpeeryearclear

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

Spotlight the troublemaker pair: bear and hear share the ear spelling and split the sounds. Ask your child why those two make the sort tricky, and the answer, spelling cannot be trusted here, only sound, is the entire lesson.

Watch for: This sort is by SOUND, not spelling, because the spellings overlap: ear says air in bear but ear in hear. The word must be said aloud before it is placed. These are the bossy-r cousins of ar and or: the r grabs the vowel and changes it. Kids who met r-controlled vowels will recognize the bossiness immediately.

Common questions about 2nd grade r-controlled air and ear sounds

How does this extend the ar/or/er page?
Ar, or, and er are the first bossy-r teams; air and ear are the next level, with more spellings per sound. Together they cover nearly every r-bent vowel in English.
How can I reinforce this in reading?
When an air/ear word appears in a book, pause and ask which column it would land in. Ten seconds per word, and the sort keeps living after the sheet is done.
