The kind of words you'll sort
Write each word from the bank in the correct column.
airfairyearpairpeercheerhearscare
Columns: sounds like air and sounds like ear. "air" belongs under sounds like air; "cheer" belongs under sounds like ear.
Every print pulls a new set of words at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling gets a different mix.
What's on a 1st grade sheet
1st grade sheets draw from 30 words, 10 to a page. 1st and 2nd grade print from the same 30 words. What changes is the standard (RF.1.3 here) and the teaching notes below. 2nd grade sheets print 14 to a page.

- Sorting. Write each word from the bank in the correct column. 10 words per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
How to teach this
Set the anchors: point to the air, touch your ear. Every word aloud, then placed under the gesture it matches. The physical anchors keep the two close sounds from blurring.
Watch for: This sort is by SOUND, not spelling, because the spellings overlap: ear says air in bear but ear in hear. The word must be said aloud before it is placed. These are the bossy-r cousins of ar and or: the r grabs the vowel and changes it. Kids who met r-controlled vowels will recognize the bossiness immediately.
Common questions about 1st grade r-controlled air and ear sounds
- Why do bear and hear sound different?
- The ear spelling serves both sounds, and only the word itself decides. That is exactly why this sheet sorts by sound rather than by letters.
- What are these sounds called?
- Teachers call them r-controlled vowels: the r bends the vowel before it. Kids just need the two anchor sounds, air and ear, and their ears.
