Ou and ow both make the ouch sound, as in cloud and cow. Ou usually works inside the word; ow takes the end, and stands before -n and -l.

1st grade Core grade

Ou and ow spell the sound in cloud and cow. First graders sort the two spellings and learn the lean: ou inside the word, ow at the end and before n or l.

2nd grade
Second graders sort quickly, handle the town/owl family, and stay alert to ow's other job (long o in snow), choosing by sound before they sort by spelling.
