The kind of words you'll complete and sort

Fill in the missing letters to make a real word, then write the whole word in its column.

hprdhlcntcrnsct

Columns: ou and ow. Only ou turns "c_nt" into a real word, so count goes under ou; Only ow turns "h_l" into a real word, so howl goes under ow.

Every print pulls a new set of words at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling gets a different mix.

What's on a 2nd grade sheet

2nd grade sheets draw from 31 words, 14 to a page. 1st and 2nd grade print from the same 31 words. What changes is the standard (RF.2.3.b here) and the teaching notes below. 1st grade sheets print 10 to a page.

Some of the words:

soundroundfoundsouthcouchcowbrownflowercrownplow

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

Collect the exceptions into their own little list as you sort: town, down, brown, owl, howl, growl. Seeing that they all end in n or l turns a messy rule back into a pattern.

Watch for: Ow has a double life: it says ouch in cow but long o in snow. Every ow word on this sheet is an ouch word; the long o ow lives with the vowel teams. Words like town and owl keep ow inside the word, before n and l. The rule is a strong lean, not a law: those two endings are the main exception family, and a few words like crowd just have to be learned.

Common questions about 2nd grade diphthongs ou and ow

What is the hardest word on these sheets?
Usually crowd or growl, where the spelling runs against a young speller's first guess. Those are also the words this practice pays off on.
How can we practice beyond the sort?
Dictation with a twist: say the word, have your child name the spelling team first, then write. Naming before writing is the habit that transfers to real writing.
