Each print is a different sheet with its own answer key. You don't need to sign up.

The kind of words you'll complete and sort

Fill in the missing letters to make a real word, then write the whole word in its column.

frncntsthldhlh

Columns: ou and ow. Only ou turns "c_nt" into a real word, so count goes under ou; Only ow turns "h_" into a real word, so how goes under ow.

Every print pulls a new set of words at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling gets a different mix.

What's on a 1st grade sheet

1st grade sheets draw from 31 words, 10 to a page. 1st and 2nd grade print from the same 31 words. What changes is the standard (RF.1.3.c here) and the teaching notes below. 2nd grade sheets print 14 to a page.

Some of the words:

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

Say each word aloud before sorting; every word here says ouch somewhere. If your child reads 'crowd' with a long o, the sheet has just found exactly the confusion it exists to fix.

Watch for: Ow has a double life: it says ouch in cow but long o in snow. Every ow word on this sheet is an ouch word; the long o ow lives with the vowel teams. Words like town and owl keep ow inside the word, before n and l. The rule is a strong lean, not a law: those two endings are the main exception family, and a few words like crowd just have to be learned.

Common questions about 1st grade diphthongs ou and ow

How do kids choose between ou and ow when spelling?
Position first: end of the word takes ow (how, now), inside leans ou (loud, found), and before n or l, ow holds its ground (town, owl). The sort builds all three instincts.
Why do some ow words sound different, like snow?
Ow spells two different sounds in English. This page trains the ouch sound only; the long o ow belongs with the vowel teams, so the two jobs never blur.
