All eight shapes print on every sheet, drawn in outline in a new order, with their names in a word bank at the top and a line under each shape to write on. The key lists the names in order.

This skill has 8 words, and every sheet uses all of them. Each print shuffles the order, so the words stay the same and the answers move around.

What's on a kindergarten sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

Have your child read the word bank with you first, then name each shape before looking for its word. Cross each word off the bank once it's used, since every name goes with exactly one shape. If your child writes rectangle under the square, ask how the sides compare: all four are the same length, so it's the square. Afterwards, go on a shape hunt around the house and find one real thing for each of the eight names.

Watch for: Writing rectangle under the square. A square is a special kind of rectangle, so this is not wrong in math, but the word bank has one name for each shape and square goes with the square. Calling the diamond a square. A square turned on its corner is still a square, but this diamond is taller than it is wide, with two sharp points at the top and bottom. Mixing up the circle and the oval. A circle is round all the way around. An oval is stretched, like an egg on its side.

Common questions about kindergarten shape names

Isn't a square also a rectangle?
Yes, a square is a rectangle with four equal sides. Kindergarten names it square, and the word bank has each name once, so square goes under the square. If your child says a square is a rectangle too, that is a good thing to hear.
Why are the star and heart here? They aren't math shapes.
They are shapes children name every day, on stickers and in books, so they are good practice for reading a shape's outline. The shapes kindergarten math names, the circle, square, triangle and rectangle, are on every sheet too.
