Six of the eight shapes print on each sheet, drawn in outline, with the shape's name beside it as dotted letters to trace. The key writes the six names out in ink.

Every print pulls a new set of shapes at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling gets a different mix.

What's on a preschool sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

Name the shapes together before any tracing. Run a finger around each one and count the corners out loud: a triangle has three, a square and a rectangle have four, a circle has none. Then let your child trace the word next to it, saying the name as they go. A child who can't read the word yet still learns from tracing it, because the shape and the word sit side by side. Four or five shapes is a good first sitting. Each print picks six of the eight.

Watch for: Writing rectangle under the square. A square is a special kind of rectangle, so this is not wrong in math, but the word bank has one name for each shape and square goes with the square. Calling the diamond a square. A square turned on its corner is still a square, but this diamond is taller than it is wide, with two sharp points at the top and bottom. Mixing up the circle and the oval. A circle is round all the way around. An oval is stretched, like an egg on its side.

Common questions about preschool shape names

Which shapes are on the sheet?
Six of these eight: circle, square, triangle, rectangle, oval, diamond, star and heart. A few prints cover all eight.
My preschooler can't read yet. Is this too hard?
No. The name is printed for your child to trace, so nobody has to spell it. Say the word together, then trace it. Reading comes later. Seeing the word beside its shape now is a start.
