Kindergarten opposites worksheets
Opposites, or antonyms, are two words at the ends of one idea: hot and cold, big and small, day and night. This sheet gives eight pairs of pictures. The first word of each pair is printed, and the child writes the opposite on the line beside it.

The kind of opposites you'll get
Look at both pictures. The first word is written for you. Find its opposite in the word bank and write it on the line.
down
short
small
soft
tall
fast
Each print draws fresh pairs from the bank. The first picture's word is printed for you and the second has a line, so the opposite gets written out. The key gives both words.
Every print pulls a new set of pictures at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling gets a different mix.
What's on a kindergarten sheet
Kindergarten sheets draw from 20 pairs of opposites, 8 to a page. Kindergarten and 1st grade print from the same 20 pairs of opposites. The teaching notes below are written for this grade.

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
How to teach this
Say the pair aloud before writing: "this one is hot, so this one is cold". Children hear opposites long before they can spell them, and the spoken pair is what makes the written one findable. If a child stalls, name the question the pair answers, "how warm is it?", and the second word usually arrives.
Watch for: Answering with a different word rather than the opposite one. Small is not the opposite of tall; short is. Ask what question both pictures answer, then give the other end of it. Treating unlike as opposite. A cat is not the opposite of a dog. Opposites need one thing that changes, like size, heat or noise, with everything else the same. Short has two partners. It is the opposite of tall and of long, and a sheet never shows both, so read the first picture before writing.
Common questions about kindergarten opposites
- Are opposites and antonyms the same thing?
- Yes. Opposites is the classroom word for the younger grades and antonyms is the same idea named in the grammar way. The kindergarten standard behind this page asks children to relate common words to their opposites.
- Why is one word already written?
- So the sheet asks for one answer and not two. The printed word fixes which end of the pair the child is starting from, which is what makes the opposite a single right answer.
