The kind of pictures you'll write about
Look at the picture. Write about what is happening. The word bank can help you spell.
lost balloon
school bus morning
birthday table
Each print draws one of thirty scenes, large, with four words from it to spell from and ruled space underneath. The key carries a sample sentence written for the grade, and says plainly that it is one answer rather than the answer.
Every print pulls a new set of scenes at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling gets a different mix.
What's on a kindergarten sheet
- Picture prompt. Look at the picture. Write about what is happening. The word bank can help you spell. 1 picture per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
How to teach this
Talk about the picture for a minute before the pencil comes out. Ask what is happening, who it is happening to, and what happens next. Then ask the child to say their sentence once, whole, and write that. A kindergartner who runs out of room after one line has done the work.
Watch for: Listing words instead of writing a sentence. 'dog dirt girl' is a list. Ask who the sentence is about and what they are doing, then write both parts. Waiting for the right answer. There is not one. The sample on the key is one child's sentence, not the sentence; anything true about the picture, written as a sentence, is correct. Treating the word bank as a checklist. The four words are there to spell from when they are needed, not to be used up.
Common questions about kindergarten picture writing prompts
- What if my child can only draw or dictate?
- That counts. The kindergarten writing standard allows drawing, dictating and writing together. Let them tell you the sentence, write it lightly, and have them trace or copy it on the rows.
- How is this graded when every answer is different?
- It is not graded against the key. The sample on the answer page shows the kind of sentence to expect at this grade, alongside the four bank words; anything true about the picture and written as a sentence is right.
