3rd grade picture writing prompts worksheets
A 3rd grade picture writing prompt asks for a short story, not a sentence. One scene prints with a problem to write about under it, such as a dog digging up the flowers, plus four bank words and eleven ruled lines. The story needs a beginning, a middle and an ending. A sample story is on the key.

The kind of pictures you'll write about
Look at the picture and read the prompt under it. Write a story with a beginning, a middle and an end. The word bank can help you spell.
beach day
bike lesson
camping night
Each print draws one of thirty scenes, large, with four words from it to spell from and ruled space underneath. The key carries a sample sentence written for the grade, and says plainly that it is one answer rather than the answer.
Every print pulls a new set of scenes at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling gets a different mix.
What's on a 3rd grade sheet
- Picture prompt. Look at the picture and read the prompt under it. Write a story with a beginning, a middle and an end. The word bank can help you spell. 1 picture per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
How to teach this
Read the prompt together and ask three planning questions before any writing: who is in the story, what goes wrong, and how it ends. Jot the answers in the margin as three words. Then the story follows the plan, a few sentences for each part. Third graders can add what a character says or feels, and a time word or two (first, then, at last) to move the story along. Read it back at the end and check the ending really finishes the problem.
Watch for: Describing the picture instead of telling a story. 'There is a dog and a girl' says what is there. A story says what goes wrong and what the characters do about it. Stopping before the ending. The problem in the prompt needs to be solved, or at least finished, by the last sentence. Treating the word bank as a checklist. The four words are there to spell from when they are needed, not to be used up.
Common questions about 3rd grade picture writing prompts
- How long should a 3rd grade story be?
- About one paragraph, the eleven lines on the sheet. A story that has a clear problem and a real ending matters more than one that fills every line.
- What does the prompt under the picture do?
- It names a problem that is in the picture, so your child has somewhere to start. They can take the story in any direction from there.
- Is the sample story on the key the right answer?
- No. It shows the kind of story to expect at this grade. Any story that fits the picture and has a beginning, a middle and an end is right.
