Kindergarten
A picture writing prompt gives a child something to write about before they can think one up. This sheet prints one big scene, four words from it to spell from, and three wide penmanship rows. A kindergartner says a sentence out loud, then writes it.

1st grade Core grade
Each print is a different sheet with its own answer key. You don't need to sign up.
Picture writing prompts hand a first grader a subject so the writing itself is the work. One scene prints large at the top, a word bank of four nouns sits under it, and five ruled rows wait below. Two or three sentences about what is happening is a full answer here.
-
2nd grade
By second grade a writing prompt should ask for a short piece, not a line. The scene on this sheet holds more than one sentence can carry, because something is about to happen in every one of them. Five rows, four bank words, and a sample on the key rather than a set answer.
-
3rd grade
A 3rd grade picture writing prompt asks for a short story, not a sentence. One scene prints with a problem to write about under it, such as a dog digging up the flowers, plus four bank words and eleven ruled lines. The story needs a beginning, a middle and an ending. A sample story is on the key.
