CVC words are the first real words most readers decode: three letters, short vowel in the middle. Kindergartners sort them by their middle sound, which trains the ear on the hardest part of the word.

Each print is a different sheet with its own answer key. You don't need to sign up.

The kind of words you'll sort

Write each word from the bank in the correct column.

taxfanjigladhogrodfoxpotlappitrimfig

Columns: short a and short i and short o. "lad" belongs under short a; "fig" belongs under short i; "rod" belongs under short o.

Every print pulls a new set of words at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling gets a different mix.

What's on a kindergarten sheet

Kindergarten sheets draw from 118 words, 15 to a page. Kindergarten and 1st grade print from the same 118 words. What changes is the standard (RF.K.3.b here) and the teaching notes below.

Some of the words:

rampatjabziphitkitlithopmomlot

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

Tap the sounds on three fingers before sorting each word: c-a-t. The middle finger is the sorting finger. If your child guesses from the first letter, cover it and start from the vowel instead.

Watch for: The middle vowel is the whole game. Kids who read the first and last letters and guess the middle need to slow down exactly there: tap each sound, then blend. CVC words are always short-vowel words. If a child says a long vowel (reading 'cap' as 'cape'), the missing silent e is the teaching moment.

Common questions about kindergarten CVC words

What does CVC mean?
Consonant-vowel-consonant: three-letter words like cat, sit, and dog. They are the standard first words for decoding because nearly every letter says one clean sound. X is the exception: in fox and six it says two sounds, k and s.
Why sort by the middle sound?
The middle vowel is where new readers stumble. Sorting forces attention onto exactly that letter, which is the point of the page.
