Kindergarten CVC picture words worksheets
CVC picture words are the first words most children spell on their own: consonant, vowel, consonant, usually three sounds in a row. Each picture on this sheet is a short-vowel word, and the child says it slowly, hears each sound, and writes the whole word on the line beneath.

The kind of pictures you'll get
Look at the picture. Say its name slowly. Write the word on the line.
dog
web
zip
kid
gem
pan
Each print draws a fresh set of pictures across the five short vowels. Under every picture is a line to write its word on; the key gives the word the sheet wants.
Every print pulls a new set of pictures at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling gets a different mix.
What's on a kindergarten sheet
Kindergarten sheets draw from 73 pictures, 12 to a page. Kindergarten and 1st grade print from the same 73 pictures. What changes is the standard (RF.K.3.b, L.K.2.d here) and the teaching notes below.

- Picture words. Look at the picture. Say its name slowly. Write the word on the line. 12 pictures per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
How to teach this
Tap the three sounds on three fingers before writing anything: c-a-t. Then write one letter per finger. If the middle letter is wrong, say the word again with the vowel stretched. Twelve words is a full sheet; six is a fine sitting for a beginner.
Watch for: Writing the first and last letters and guessing the middle. The vowel is where CVC spelling goes wrong; have the child say the middle sound on its own before writing it. Naming the picture with another word. A 'puppy' for the dog picture cannot be spelled here. Agree the picture's name first; the key gives it. Expecting x to be one sound. In fox and box the x says two sounds, k and s, but it is still one letter. Say the word, hear k-s at the end, and write x.
Common questions about kindergarten CVC picture words
- What does CVC mean?
- Consonant, vowel, consonant: cat, sit, dog. Three letters, three sounds, and a short vowel in the middle. They are the standard first words to spell because every letter says one clean sound. Words with x, like fox, stay off this sheet: x says two sounds, /k/ and /s/.
- What if my child names the picture differently?
- The key on the last page gives the word the sheet wants. Agree on that name before the child writes; then the sounds match the letters.
