1st grade CVC words worksheets
First graders sort CVC words by vowel quickly and accurately. The sort builds the habit that unlocks all decoding: look at the vowel, say its sound, blend through the whole word.

The kind of words you'll sort
Write each word from the bank in the correct column.

Columns: short a and short i and short o. "dab" belongs under short a; "big" belongs under short i; "pod" belongs under short o.
Every print pulls a new set of words at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling gets a different mix.
What's on a 1st grade sheet
1st grade sheets draw from 118 words, 15 to a page. Kindergarten and 1st grade print from the same 118 words. What changes is the standard (RF.1.2.c here) and the teaching notes below.

- Sorting. Write each word from the bank in the correct column. 15 words per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
How to teach this
After sorting, pick two words from different columns and ask what changes when you swap the vowels: hat becomes hot. Playing with the swap shows that the vowel is the word's engine.
Watch for: The middle vowel is the whole game. Kids who read the first and last letters and guess the middle need to slow down exactly there: tap each sound, then blend. CVC words are always short-vowel words. If a child says a long vowel (reading 'cap' as 'cape'), the missing silent e is the teaching moment.
Common questions about 1st grade CVC words
- My child reads these easily. What next?
- Speed and spelling. Dictate a word from the sheet and have your child write it, then check their own spelling against the column. Writing CVC words is the natural next step after reading them.
- Why do some sheets repeat words?
- Each sheet draws a fresh mix from a larger word bank, so repeats across sheets are spaced practice, which is exactly how sight-level decoding gets built.
