Perfect tenses connect two times: has or have + past participle links past to now (has taught for years); had + participle reaches further back (had finished before the bus came).
Two grades, one set of sentences: both print from the same 40. Print one here, or open a grade for examples and teaching notes.

Fifth graders build perfect tenses from a base verb: has/have + participle for past-touching-present, had + participle for past-before-past. Time phrases like 'by sunset' and 'since September' carry the clues.

Sixth graders write the present perfect and the past perfect fluently, including irregular participles, and use them to sequence events precisely in their own writing. These sheets stick to has, have, and had; the third perfect tense, the future perfect (will have finished), is built the same way.
