How to teach this
Ask two questions about every number: which place, then what value. A 6 in the thousandths place is 0.006, and saying both keeps them separate. If thousandths feel abstract, connect them to measurement: a millimeter is a thousandth of a meter. Watch the zeros: your child should see that empty places still count.
Watch for: Kids read the 7 in 34.72 as 'seventy': after the decimal point places shrink, so that 7 is worth 0.7. Kids mix up tens and tenths: tens sit to the left of the decimal point, tenths sit first on the right.
Common questions about decimal place value
- How is 5th grade decimal place value different from 4th?
- Numbers stretch to the thousandths place, per 5.NBT.A.3.a, so there are three places past the decimal point to keep straight instead of two.
- Why does my child mix up tens and tenths?
- The names are one letter apart, and the places mirror each other around the ones place. A quick chart with the decimal point marked as the landmark usually clears it up.
