How to teach this
Start every problem with the same question: "what number goes into both?" Two even numbers always take a 2, and that first easy step builds momentum. Have your child write the division above and below the fraction (6 ÷ 2 over 8 ÷ 2) so the both-sides rule stays visible.
Watch for: Kids divide only the top or only the bottom. Whatever divides one side must divide the other, or the fraction changes value. Kids stop after one step, leaving 12/16 as 6/8. Keep dividing until the only number that fits both is 1.
Common questions about simplifying fractions
- How does my child know when a fraction is fully simplified?
- When no number except 1 divides both the top and the bottom. A quick test: if both numbers are even, it's not done yet.
- Does it matter which common factor they divide by first?
- No. Small steps and one big step land in the same place. Dividing by 2 twice or by 4 once both turn 8/12 into 2/3.
