4th grade equivalent fractions worksheets
Fourth grade drops the pictures: each problem is numeric, like 3/5 = ▢/20, with bigger factors than third grade used. Your child works out what the denominator was multiplied by and does the same to the numerator.

How to teach this
Ask "what did the bottom get multiplied by?" before anything else, and have your child write that little × 4 next to the equals sign so the step stays visible. Check a finished answer by simplifying it back: 12/20 should return to 3/5. If your child is guessing, cover the second denominator and let them build the new fraction themselves.
Watch for: Kids add the same number to the top and bottom, turning 1/2 into 2/3. Adding changes the fraction's size; only multiplying both parts keeps it. Kids multiply the bottom and copy the top across unchanged. Whatever the denominator was multiplied by, the numerator gets the same.
Common questions about equivalent fractions
- How is this different from the 3rd grade version?
- The bars are gone and the factors are bigger. Fourth graders work from the numbers alone, which is the reasoning 4.NF.A.1 asks for.
- Is it always the numerator that's missing?
- On this sheet, yes. Keeping the blank in one place makes the multiply-top-and-bottom habit automatic before anything else moves around.
