Columns: everyday word and stronger word. "tired" belongs under everyday word; "freezing" belongs under stronger word.
Every print pulls a fresh set of word lists at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling never gets the same sheet.
What's on each sheet
- Sorting. Write each word from the bank in the correct column. 14 words per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
How to teach this
Bring it to writing: circle one everyday word in your child's draft and ask for its stronger cousin, but only if the moment deserves it. That last clause is the actual craft lesson.
Watch for: Strong words are not better words: a whisper-word in the right spot beats a shout-word in the wrong one. The skill is knowing the volume, then choosing it. These pairs are teammates, not synonym-flashcards: each strong word is the everyday word intensified, and hearing the step up is the point of the sort.
Common questions about shades of meaning
- What comes after two-column sorting?
- Ordering: putting warm, hot, and blazing in a row. The sheets set up the ladder; your child can rank any trio at the kitchen table.
- When is the strong word the wrong choice?
- When the moment is small. Thrilled about socks reads as joking. Matching intensity to occasion is the grown-up version of this skill, and it starts here.
