Columns: everyday word and stronger word. "quiet" belongs under everyday word; "blazing" belongs under stronger word.
Every print pulls a fresh set of word lists at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling never gets the same sheet.
What's on each sheet
- Sorting. Write each word from the bank in the correct column. 10 words per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
How to teach this
Play the volume game: you say the quiet word, your child turns it up, then swap. Cold... freezing! Fast... lightning-quick! The game runs itself in the car forever after.
Watch for: Strong words are not better words: a whisper-word in the right spot beats a shout-word in the wrong one. The skill is knowing the volume, then choosing it. These pairs are teammates, not synonym-flashcards: each strong word is the everyday word intensified, and hearing the step up is the point of the sort.
Common questions about shades of meaning
- How does acting help?
- Shades of meaning are physical: tiptoe versus stomp, whisper versus shout. Acting the pairs stores them in the body, which is where first graders keep important things.
- Which pairs matter most?
- The everyday ones: big/huge, mad/furious, wet/soaked. They cover most of what a young writer wants to say more strongly.
