The kind of sentences you'll fix

Choose the transition that truly connects the two sentences, and write it.

  1. The creek floods each spring. (For this reason / On the other hand / Similarly), the path is gravel, not dirt.

Fixed: The creek floods each spring. For this reason, the path is gravel, not dirt.

  2. Many birds migrate at night. (For example / However / Meanwhile), most warblers travel after dark.
  3. Snow fell overnight. (By morning / However / Similarly), the plows had cleared Main Street.

Every print pulls a new set of sentences at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling gets a different mix.

What's on a 3rd grade sheet

3rd grade sheets draw from 42 sentences, 8 to a page. 3rd to 6th grade print from the same 42 sentences. The teaching notes below are written for this grade. All 40 of 2nd grade's sentences are here too, plus 2 more. 2nd grade sheets print 7 to a page.

A few of the sentences, as the answer key corrects them:

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

Build the road-sign chart together as the sheets introduce words: adding signs, turning signs, time signs, concluding signs. Sorting the signs is learning the system.

Watch for: Each transition has a direction: adding, turning, concluding, timing. The wrong word sends the reader down the wrong road, however true both sentences are. The relationship BETWEEN the sentences decides everything: read both, name the connection, then choose. Transition first, meaning second, fails every time.

Common questions about 3rd grade linking and transition words

What does each transition signal?
Direction: however turns, for example illustrates, therefore concludes, meanwhile runs in parallel. Road signs for the reader, chosen by the writer.
Why do the wrong options matter?
They are real transitions pointing the wrong way; an also where a however belongs derails the meaning. Choosing correctly proves the relationship was read.
