3rd grade division with remainders worksheets
Division facts that do not come out even. Third graders find the biggest fact that fits and name what is left, which is the first step toward long division and the reason remainders exist. Every problem on the sheet has a remainder.

The kind of problems you'll get
Divide. Write the quotient above the bar. Use R for the remainder.
-
7 = 10 × + 0 ≤ < 10
Answer: 0
-
27 = 5 × + 0 ≤ < 5
Answer: 5
-
3 = 2 × + 0 ≤ < 2
Answer: 1
Every print pulls a fresh set of problems at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling never gets the same sheet.
What's on a 3rd grade sheet
The sample sheet above has 12 problems. Its answers run from 0 to 10.
- Division with remainders. Divide. Write the quotient above the bar. Use R for the remainder. 12 problems per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key after the problems.
How to teach this
Use counters the first time: 23 shared into 5 groups gives 4 each with 3 left. Then connect it to the fact: 5 × 4 = 20. Say the check aloud, 'is 3 smaller than 5?' A remainder larger than the divisor means the fact chosen was too small.
Watch for: Kids pick a fact that is too small (5 × 3 = 15 for 23 ÷ 5) and get a remainder of 8. If the remainder is bigger than the divisor, go up one fact. Kids write 4.3 or 4 3/5 instead of 4 r3 because they have seen decimals. At this level the answer is a whole number and a remainder.
Common questions about 3rd grade division with remainders
- Does every problem have a remainder?
- Yes. The division facts page has exact answers; this page is only the leftover case.
- Is this long division?
- Not yet. These are single facts with a remainder, the step that comes before the long division bracket.
