What's on a 1st grade sheet

The sample sheet above has 25 problems. Its answers run from 3 to 30.

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key after the problems.

How to teach this

Time the first sheet without saying it is a race, and write the time at the top. Repeat every few days; the same child, the same minute, more boxes filled. Do not push for speed before the strategies (make ten, doubles, doubles plus one) are solid, or the timer will teach guessing.

Watch for: Kids count on their fingers for every fact, which is fine for learning but too slow for a timed grid. Recall, not counting, is the goal. Kids rush and write the answer to the previous problem in the next box. One box at a time, finger on the problem.

Common questions about 1st grade addition mad minute

How long should a mad minute take?
One minute is the tradition, but for a first grader two or three minutes is fair. The time matters less than seeing it shrink.
Is this the same as the addition within 20 page?
Same facts, different job. That page is a column sheet for practice; this one is a timed grid for speed.
