Preschool count the objects worksheets

Preschool counting with objects prints six groups of pictures, one kind of thing in each group, with a writing line under it for the number. Apples in one group, ducks in the next. Each picture is big enough for a three or four year old to put a finger on and say a number as they go.

The kind of problems you'll get

Count the objects. Write how many.

  1. Count the objects: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.

    Answer: 6

Most problems on this sheet sit beside a picture, model or diagram, so this is the worked example the sheet itself prints. The answer key on page two prints the answer under every problem.

Every print pulls a fresh set of problems at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling never gets the same sheet.

What's on each sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key after the problems.

This sheet is one of the versions on the Preschool counting & number recognition 0–10 page, with its own difficulty choices and its own answer key.

How to teach this

Count out loud together with your child's finger on the pictures, one touch per object, and say the last number again before they write it. Objects hold a three year old longer than dots do, and every print deals a different set of things, so the second sheet does not feel like the first one. If they lose count halfway, start again from the left rather than correcting the number. Six groups is a whole session at this age. Stop while they still want another one.

Watch for: Kids name the objects instead of counting them, so a row of ducks comes back as "ducks" rather than four. Ask how many ducks there are, and move their finger while they say the numbers. Kids count the parts of a picture instead of the pictures. A cookie with chips on it invites exactly that. Point at the whole cookie once, say one, and the rest usually follows.

Common questions about preschool count the objects

Are the objects the same every time?
No. Each print deals a different set, and no two groups on one page count the same thing. The numbers change too, so printing it again gives your child a different sheet.
How is this different from the dot sheet?
Only the picture. Same six groups, same writing lines, same numbers up to ten. Some children count dots happily; others need the things they count to be things.
My child counts but cannot write the numbers yet.
Say the count together and write the numeral for them. Counting and handwriting arrive at different times, and the number tracing sheets practise the shapes on their own.
