The kind of words you'll practice

Trace each word two times. Then write it yourself on the line.

JanuaryFebruaryMarchAprilMayJuneJulyAugust

Each word appears twice in light gray for tracing, then once as a blank line for writing it without help.

The words print in the order they come on a calendar, 6 to a sheet. Each print picks a starting point and carries on from there, going back to the first one after the last, so the order gets practice from anywhere in the list.

What's on a kindergarten sheet

Kindergarten sheets draw from 12 words, 6 to a page. Kindergarten and 1st grade print from the same 12 words. The teaching notes below are written for this grade. 1st grade sheets print 7 to a page.

Some of the words:

SeptemberOctoberNovemberDecember

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with a word list on the last page.

How to teach this

Month names are long words for a kindergartner, so one sheet can take two short sittings. Say each month together before tracing it, and name something your family does in that month, like a birthday or the first snow. The capital comes first. Point to it on the traced copy, then look for it on your child's own.

Watch for: Children often write month names in lowercase because they sound like ordinary words. Every month is a name and gets a capital, so check the first letter of each row before anything else. February is the month most children misspell, because many people say it without the first r. Say Feb-ru-ary slowly while your child writes it.

Common questions about kindergarten months of the year

Is kindergarten too early for the months of the year?
Not for saying them and tracing them. Many kindergarten classes say the month every morning at calendar time, and tracing the name connects the word to the sound. Spelling the months from memory can wait until 1st grade or later.
Why are only six months on the sheet?
Six rows keep the letters big enough for a kindergartner. The months always print in order from a starting month that each print picks, so a few sheets cover the whole year.
