1st grade CVC picture words worksheets

First graders spell CVC words from a picture without a word bank: say the word, segment its sounds, write the three letters in order. This sheet mixes the five short vowels, changes the pictures on every print, and puts the answer on the key so a parent can check without guessing the picture's name.

Free printable PDF worksheet, aligned to Common Core RF.1.2.c, L.1.2.d.

Each print is a different sheet with its own answer key. You don't need to sign up.

The kind of pictures you'll get

Look at the picture. Say its name slowly. Write the word on the line.

  • sunsun
  • kitkit
  • capcap
  • bunbun
  • daddad
  • puppup

Each print draws a fresh set of pictures across the five short vowels. Under every picture is a line to write its word on; the key gives the word the sheet wants.

Every print pulls a new set of pictures at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling gets a different mix.

What's on a 1st grade sheet

1st grade sheets draw from 73 pictures, 12 to a page. Kindergarten and 1st grade print from the same 73 pictures. What changes is the standard (RF.1.2.c, L.1.2.d here) and the teaching notes below.

Some of the words:

hatpanvanraghendoglogjugtubhut

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

Ask the child to write first and check afterwards against the key, out loud, one word at a time. A wrong vowel is a listening slip; a wrong consonant is usually a handwriting or letter-sound slip. Both are worth naming, briefly, before the next word.

Watch for: Writing the first and last letters and guessing the middle. The vowel is where CVC spelling goes wrong; have the child say the middle sound on its own before writing it. Naming the picture with another word. A 'puppy' for the dog picture cannot be spelled here. Agree the picture's name first; the key gives it. Expecting x to be one sound. In fox and box the x says two sounds, k and s, but it is still one letter. Say the word, hear k-s at the end, and write x.

Common questions about 1st grade CVC picture words

Is every sheet different?
Yes. Each print draws twelve fresh pictures across the five short vowels, so a second sheet is real spelling practice rather than memory.
What comes next?
Sound boxes, which split each word into its sounds with a box for each, and the word family sorts, which group these words by their endings.
