Kindergarten sort and count pictures worksheets

Sort and count pictures prints four rows for kindergarten. Each row shuffles six to nine drawings from two kinds, farm animals and vehicles in one row, clothes and tools in the next, and prints both names under it with a box beside each. Your child counts how many belong to each name and writes the two numbers. The key gives both.

The kind of problems you'll get

Count the pictures of each kind. Write how many.

  1. Count the fruits in the row, then the vehicles.

    Answer: 3 fruits, 4 vehicles

Most problems on this sheet sit beside a picture, model or diagram, so this is the worked example the sheet itself prints. The answer key on page two prints the answer under every problem.

Every print pulls a fresh set of problems at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling never gets the same sheet.

What's on each sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key after the problems.

This sheet is one of the versions on the Kindergarten sort and count page, with its own difficulty choices and its own answer key.

How to teach this

Ask your child to say the two names out loud before they start, then find one kind at a time. Counting the fruits while skipping past the trucks is the skill, and it is harder than counting a row of one thing. A finger on each picture as they go keeps them from counting the same one twice. When the first number is written, send them back to the start for the other kind rather than letting them count both at once. The two numbers add up to the whole row, so counting the row is how you check the work together. K.MD.B.3 is this task: sort objects into categories and count how many are in each. Every picture in a row is a different drawing, so the row cannot be finished by matching identical shapes.

Watch for: Kids count the whole row and write that number twice. Point at the two names and ask how many of that one, not how many altogether. Kids lose their place and count a picture twice. Have them touch each one as they say the number, and go left to right both times.

Common questions about kindergarten sort and count pictures

Which kinds of pictures come up?
Farm animals, vehicles, clothes, tools, fruits, sea animals, zoo animals, kitchen things, insects, school things, birds, furniture, pets and weather. Each row pairs two of them that look nothing alike, so the sorting is about what the thing is.
How many pictures are in a row?
Six to nine, with at least two of each kind. That is enough to make sorting real without asking a five year old to keep track of a long row.
How is this different from the sort and count sheet on the parent page?
That one uses shapes and asks your child to circle one kind and box the other before writing the counts. This one uses drawings of real things and only asks for the two numbers.
