A conjunctive adverb (however, therefore, instead, meanwhile) joins two complete sentences into one and names how they relate: a contrast, a result, one more point, a replacement, a condition, or two things at once. It takes a semicolon before it and a comma after it. Seventh graders read both clauses and write the adverb that fits.

Eighth grade adds the conjunctive adverbs that essays lean on: nevertheless, conversely, consequently, accordingly, thus, moreover, indeed, likewise and subsequently. The clauses are longer and often contain a subordinate clause of their own, so eighth graders find where the first sentence ends, name the link, and write the one adverb that fits it.
