Subordinating Conjunctions Worksheets
Subordinating conjunctions (because, although, until, before, after, while, if) attach a helper idea to a main idea and label the connection: reason, surprise, time, or condition. Third graders choose the one whose label matches the logic of the sentence.

What students need to know
Subordinating conjunctions join a helper idea to a main idea and name the link: because (why), although (surprise), until (time), if (condition).
This skill runs from 3rd grade through 6th grade. Pick a grade above for level-matched sentences, teaching notes, and worksheets.
Subordinating Conjunctions across the grades
3rd Grade
Subordinating conjunctions (because, although, until, before, after, while, if) attach a helper idea to a main idea and label the connection: reason, surprise, time, or condition. Third graders choose the one whose label matches the logic of the sentence.
4th Grade
Fourth graders work the fuller set (since, unless, though) and sharpen the contrasts: because versus although is the reason-versus-surprise fork, until versus while splits the timing. Reading the whole sentence before choosing is the skill; the conjunction is the label the logic demands.
5th Grade
Fifth graders use the full family: although, because, unless, while, since, whenever, to build complex sentences where one idea leans on another. Choosing the right subordinator means reading the logic between the clauses: cause, contrast, condition, or time.
6th Grade
Sixth graders pick subordinators in sentences where several are grammatical but only one matches the logic: although concedes, because explains, unless sets a condition. This is the sentence machinery of academic writing, tested one joint at a time.
