Eighth grade questions zoom in on a single paragraph and a single sentence: the role one line plays, how a sentence sharpens or limits a key idea, what a closing paragraph changes. The overall structure still matters, but the grade-8 standard asks for the detail inside it.

The Freezer at the End of the World

What's on an 8th grade sheet

8th grade sheets draw from 15 passages, 404 to 453 words long. 7th and 8th grade print from the same 15 passages. What changes is the standard (RI.8.5 here) and the teaching notes below.

Some of the titles: The Golden Ball on the Eighty-Seventh Floor, Fourteen Years Over the East River, The Toronto Extract, Two Deserts, Two Reasons, Twelve Sailors, Six Remedies, The Sea That Walked Away.

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

Give every sentence in one paragraph a job title: claim, reason, example, limit, turn. Then ask which sentence the paragraph can't do without. Eighth graders who can name a sentence's job can answer the "what role does this sentence play" questions without guessing.

Watch for: Kids identify structure by topic instead of shape. A text about volcanoes can be steps, causes, a comparison, or a description; the topic never decides. The signal words and the paragraphs' jobs do. Signal words are evidence, not decoration. An answer that names the structure without pointing at its signals is a guess that happened to land.

Common questions about 8th grade text structure

What does 'the role of a sentence' mean?
It is the job one sentence does for its paragraph: stating the key idea, giving the reason, adding an example, or narrowing the claim. The eighth grade standard asks students to analyze a paragraph at that level of detail.
Why do the wrong answers sound reasonable?
Because each one describes something that really is in the passage, just not the part the question points to. The key names the right job for every item, so a student can see which sentence was doing what.
