Liberty in Pieces

In 1865, a French legal scholar named Edouard de Laboulaye proposed a gift for the United States: a monument to liberty and to the friendship between the two nations. It would take twenty-one years, two countries, and thousands of donors before that gift stood in…

What's on a 7th grade sheet

7th grade sheets draw from 15 passages, 404 to 453 words long. 7th and 8th grade print from the same 15 passages. What changes is the standard (RI.7.5 here) and the teaching notes below. None of these passages are on 6th grade sheets. On 6th grade sheets they run 257 to 287 words.

Some of the titles: The Golden Ball on the Eighty-Seventh Floor, Fourteen Years Over the East River, The Toronto Extract, Money Too Heavy to Move, The Sea That Walked Away, A Gold Mirror in the Dark.

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

Try the cut test. Pick a section and ask what the passage would lose without it. If the answer is "nothing much," the section is support. If the whole argument falls over, it carries the central idea. That question is most of what the grade-7 standard means by how sections contribute to the whole.

Watch for: Kids identify structure by topic instead of shape. A text about volcanoes can be steps, causes, a comparison, or a description; the topic never decides. The signal words and the paragraphs' jobs do. Signal words are evidence, not decoration. An answer that names the structure without pointing at its signals is a guess that happened to land.

Common questions about 7th grade text structure

What does seventh grade add to text structure?
It adds sections. The standard asks how the major sections contribute to the whole text and to its ideas, so the passages run longer, often under headings, and the questions ask what each part does, not only what the overall shape is.
Do the five structures still apply?
Yes. Time order, comparison, cause and effect, problem and solution, and description are still the building blocks, but a longer text can mix them: a problem-and-solution article may tell its history in time order. The questions ask which shape runs the whole passage.
