How to teach this
Make a signal-word wall from the sheet itself. First, next, and finally in one column; because and as a result in another; both, unlike, and while in a third. Your child will start hearing the columns in everything they read, which is the skill installing itself.
Watch for: Kids identify structure by topic instead of shape. A text about volcanoes can be steps, causes, a comparison, or a description; the topic never decides. The signal words and the paragraphs' jobs do. Signal words are evidence, not decoration. An answer that names the structure without pointing at its signals is a guess that happened to land.
