How to teach this
Start with singular they, because it is the answer your student has been told to avoid and now needs to use. Everyone brought their lunch is standard English, and current style guides accept it. The answer keys never ask a student to choose between their and his or her; the wrong options are its and a pronoun in the wrong person, like your or our. Then teach the of-phrase group (all, most, some) as the one place where the noun after of decides. For relative clauses, draw the arrow through who or which to the noun it stands for.
Watch for: Everyone and somebody sound like crowds but name one person at a time. Their is the standard pronoun for them; its and your are not. All, most and some break the cross-out habit: the noun after of decides the pronoun.
