7th grade pronoun-antecedent agreement worksheets
7th grade agreement asks for a rule as well as an arrow. When two owners are joined by or or nor, the nearer one decides: neither the players nor the coach, Mr. Vega, forgot his whistle. A group acting as one unit takes its, each of the girls takes her, and reflexive pronouns (himself, themselves) match their owner like any other pronoun.

How to teach this
Keep the arrow habit from earlier grades, and add one question for the or and nor sentences: which owner is closer to the blank? Neither Ms. Vega nor her students brought their slips, but neither the students nor Ms. Vega brought her copy. Reading the two versions side by side shows your student that the rule is about position, not about who matters more. For reflexives, have them say the owner out loud first. The twins taught themselves; Fatima taught herself.
Watch for: The pronoun matches its owner, not just the nearest noun. The one exception is or and nor, where the nearer of the two owners decides. In formal writing, a team, class, or committee acting as one unit takes its.
Common questions about 7th grade pronoun-antecedent agreement
- Which owner wins when two are joined by or or nor?
- The nearer one. Either Marcus or the twins will bring their cooler; either the twins or Marcus will bring his cooler. Same two owners, different order, different pronoun. The rule is the same one subject-verb agreement uses with or and nor.
- Why do the answer keys never use their for each of the girls?
- Because the sentence already tells you the owner is a girl, so her is the clear answer in edited writing. Singular they is for a person the sentence does not name as he or she, and it shows up in the grade 8 sheets.
