7th grade subtracting grouped linear expressions worksheets

Tap to see another sample sheet. The picture follows the difficulty you pick.

Practice subtracting grouped linear expressions in six problems. Easier problems use positive terms inside both binomials. On-level problems vary the signs; harder problems always include a negative term in the group being subtracted, with two longer groups. Change every sign in the second group before collecting like terms. The default complete key shows each sign change.

The kind of problems you'll get

Remove the grouping, then combine like terms. Show your steps.

  1. (3/10 + 11/4 × p) − (1/5 + p)

    Answer: 7/4 × p + 1/10

  2. (13/10 × n − 2) − (1/2 × n − 3/5)

    Answer: 4/5 × n − 7/5

  3. (−3/5 − x) − (11/10 − 3/4 × x)

    Answer: −1/4 × x − 17/10

Every print pulls a fresh set of problems at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling never gets the same sheet.

What's on a 7th grade sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key after the problems.

How to teach this

Ask your child to mark every term in the group being subtracted. A negative variable term becomes positive, and a negative constant becomes positive too.

Watch for: Keep constants separate from variable terms. Subtracting a group changes the sign of every term, including constants.

Common questions about 7th grade subtracting grouped linear expressions

Are decimals included?
Yes. Each sheet includes two decimal problems and four fraction problems.
Can the variable terms cancel?
Yes. Two problems simplify to a constant because their variable coefficients add to zero.
How do the difficulty levels differ?
Easier and on-level problems subtract two binomials, using common denominators up to 10 and 12 respectively. On level adds practice subtracting negative terms. Harder includes two longer groups, subtracts negative terms in every problem and uses common denominators up to 40.
What does the answer key show?
By default, the key shows group removal, collection of like terms, the required arithmetic and the simplified expression. Choose Answers only for final answers without the worked steps.
