7th grade adding linear expressions worksheets
Each of these eight problems adds two grouped linear expressions. Fractions and decimals appear, and either a variable term or a constant may come first. Remove the grouping, then collect like terms. Choose easier for mostly same-sign pairs, on level for a mix of sign patterns, or more difficult for opposite-sign pairs and more demanding fraction work. The default worked key keeps every step.

-
(−3/2 − m) + (4/5 − 11/10 × m)
Answer: −21/10 × m − 7/10
-
(9/10 + 6/5 × z) + (7/5 − 6/5 × z)
Answer: 23/10
-
(−3 − 7/10 × a) + (23/10 + 7/5 × a)
Answer: 7/10 × a − 7/10
Every print pulls a fresh set of problems at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling never gets the same sheet.
What's on a 7th grade sheet
- Adding linear expressions. Remove the grouping, then combine like terms. Show your steps. 8 problems per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key after the problems.
How to teach this
Ask your child to keep each term with its sign when removing parentheses. Add variable coefficients separately from constants.
Watch for: Keep constants separate from variable terms. Keep every sign when adding groups.
Common questions about 7th grade adding linear expressions
- Are decimals included?
- Yes. Each sheet includes three decimal problems and five fraction problems.
- Can the variable terms cancel?
- Yes. Two problems simplify to a constant because their variable coefficients add to zero.
- How do the difficulty levels differ?
- All levels add two binomials. Easier uses common denominators up to 10 and mostly same-sign pairs. On level mixes sign patterns with common denominators up to 12. More difficult uses opposite signs in both sums and common denominators up to 40.
- What does the answer key show?
- By default, the key shows group removal, collection of like terms, the required arithmetic and the simplified expression. Choose Answers only for final answers without the worked steps.
