7th grade collecting rational like terms worksheets

Tap to see another sample sheet. The picture follows the difficulty you pick.

Practice combining like terms in eight expressions with signed fractions or decimals. Choose easier two-term problems, on-level problems with two or three terms, or harder problems with three or four. Each sheet includes cancellation to zero. The default complete key shows grouping and addition, with common-denominator work for fractions. Choose Answers only for final answers without the worked steps.

The kind of problems you'll get

Combine like terms. Show your steps.

  1. 3/4 × b + b

    Answer: 7/4 × b

  2. −17/12 × e − 5/6 × e + 11/12 × e

    Answer: −4/3 × e

  3. −0.1 × x + 0.6 × x + 0.2 × x

    Answer: 0.7 × x

Every print pulls a fresh set of problems at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling never gets the same sheet.

What's on a 7th grade sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key after the problems.

How to teach this

Ask your child to name each coefficient before adding. When the denominators differ, rewrite the fractions using a common denominator. Keep the variable with the result unless its coefficient is zero.

Watch for: Add the numerators only after finding a common denominator. A variable written alone has coefficient 1; a minus sign makes its coefficient −1.

Common questions about 7th grade collecting rational like terms

Which numbers appear?
All three levels use signed fractions and decimals with up to two decimal places. Easier problems have two terms and common denominators up to 10. On-level problems have two or three terms and common denominators up to 12. Harder problems have three or four terms and common denominators up to 40.
Do students find the value of the variable?
Students simplify expressions. There is no equation to solve.
What happens when the variable terms cancel?
Write zero. These problems contain only variable terms, so nothing remains when their coefficients add to zero.
