7th grade solving two-step equations worksheets

Tap to see another sample sheet. The picture follows the difficulty you pick.

A two-step equation such as 6x - 2 = -20 takes two inverse operations to solve. Students undo the addition or subtraction, then divide by the coefficient. This sheet includes signed integers, fractions and decimals, with a worked solution and an original-equation check for every problem. Easier uses smaller numbers and fewer negative coefficients. On level balances positive and negative coefficients. Harder adds more negative coefficients and more fractional or decimal answers while keeping the same two solving steps.

Each print is a different sheet with its own answer key. You don't need to sign up.

The kind of problems you'll get

Solve each equation. Show your steps, then check your answer in the original equation.

  1. −2 × a + 1 = −19

    Answer: a = 10

  2. 2 × b − 4 = −10

    Answer: b = −3

  3. 3/4 × w + 13/4 = 13/4

    Answer: w = 0

Every print pulls a fresh set of problems at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling never gets the same sheet.

What's on a 7th grade sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key after the problems.

How to teach this

Ask your child which term is added to or subtracted from the variable term. Undo that operation on both sides first. Then divide by the coefficient and substitute the answer into the original equation to check it.

Watch for: Apply the same operation to both sides to keep the equation balanced. When you divide by a negative coefficient, include its sign in the calculation.

Common questions about 7th grade solving two-step equations

What is included in the answer key?
By default, each problem has a worked solution, a reason for each solving step, and a check in the original equation. Choose Answers only for final answers without the worked steps.
What kinds of numbers are used?
Every setting has two integer problems, three fraction problems and three decimal problems. Easier and on level have two noninteger answers; harder has five. Every sheet includes one equation whose solution is zero.
Does this sheet include equations with parentheses?
This sheet practices equations with a variable term and a separate constant. Equations with parentheses have their own sheet.
