7th grade expanding with rational factors worksheets

Tap to see another sample sheet. The picture follows the difficulty you pick.

Expand eight expressions with fraction or decimal factors. Easier problems use factors smaller than one in magnitude and simpler sign combinations. On level covers every combination of positive and negative signs. Harder problems combine negative factors with negative terms and larger products. Multiply both terms inside the parentheses. The default key includes complete work for every problem.

The kind of problems you'll get

Expand each expression. Show your steps.

  1. 1/2 × (2 × x + 2)

    Answer: x + 1

  2. −5/4 × (3 × d − 1)

    Answer: −15/4 × d + 5/4

  3. 5/4 × (−p + 1)

    Answer: −5/4 × p + 5/4

Every print pulls a fresh set of problems at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling never gets the same sheet.

What's on a 7th grade sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key after the problems.

How to teach this

Ask your child to point to both terms before multiplying. Work out each sign separately, then multiply the numbers. Fraction answers stay exact; decimals use no more than two places.

Watch for: Multiply both terms inside the parentheses by the outside factor. Keep track of the sign of each product.

Common questions about 7th grade expanding with rational factors

Are negative factors included?
Yes. Each sheet includes positive and negative outside factors in both fraction and decimal form.
Do students solve for x?
No. Students rewrite the expression with the parentheses removed.
How large are the numbers?
Easier products have magnitude at most 2, on-level products at most 4 and harder products at most 6. Each sheet has four fraction problems and four decimal problems. The terms inside the parentheses use whole-number magnitudes.
What does the answer key show?
By default, the key shows the original expression and both simplified products, with the factor used in the distribution step. Choose Answers only for final answers without the worked steps.
