6th grade mean, median & mode word problems worksheets

Grade 6 statistics word problems each print a small data set inside a story, jump distances at field day, birds at a feeder, practice minutes, and ask for one measure: mean, median, mode, or range, per 6.SP.B.5. Data sets are 5 to 7 values and every answer is a whole number.

The kind of problems you'll get

Read each story. Show your reasoning and include the unit in each answer.

  1. Find the summaries of 2, 3, 3, 8.

    Answer: Mean 4; median 3; mode 3; range 6.

Most problems on this sheet sit beside a picture, model or diagram, so this is the worked example the sheet itself prints. The answer key on page two prints the answer under every problem.

Every print pulls a fresh set of problems at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling never gets the same sheet.

What's on each sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key after the problems.

How to teach this

Teach one reflex: sort the list before anything else. Median and range read straight off a sorted list, mode jumps out visually, and the sort costs nothing for mean. Then have your child say what the measure means in the story: a mean of 7 means the practices would be 7 minutes each if perfectly even. The interpretation question is where quiet misunderstandings surface.

Watch for: Kids hunt for the median in the unsorted list and grab whatever sits in the middle position. Median only means middle after sorting; the sort is the actual work. Kids mix up mode and mean because both start with m. Mode is the value that shows up most, no arithmetic at all. If every value appears once, the confusion shows immediately. Kids compute range as the biggest value alone, or subtract the first from the last as listed. Range is largest minus smallest after a sort, one subtraction, order decided by size.

Common questions about mean, median & mode word problems

Are all four measures on one sheet?
Yes, mixed, so the first decision on every problem is which measure the question names. Each problem carries its own data set of five to seven values, printed in the story.
Do the means come out even?
Yes. The data sets are built so the total divides evenly by the count, which keeps attention on what the mean is rather than on remainder arithmetic. The answer key shows the answer for every problem.
