6th grade polygons on the coordinate plane worksheets
Polygons on the coordinate plane worksheets for 6th grade mix three tasks on one grid: fill in the missing corner of a rectangle, find the length of a side from its endpoints, and plot a set of vertices, close the shape, and find its area in square units. Six problems per print. Every grid square is 1 unit.

Each print is a different sheet with its own answer key. You don't need to sign up.

The kind of problems you'll get
Complete the coordinates and side length. Plot and find polygon areas. Each grid square is 1 unit; write areas in square units.
-
A rectangle has opposite corners (1, 2) and (5, 5).
Answer: Width = 5 − 1 = 4 ; height = 5 − 2 = 3 ; area = 12 square units.
Most problems on this sheet sit beside a picture, model or diagram, so this is the worked example the sheet itself prints. The answer key on page two prints the answer under every problem.
Every print pulls a fresh set of problems at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling never gets the same sheet.
What's on each sheet
- Polygons on the coordinate plane. Complete the coordinates and side length. Plot and find polygon areas. Each grid square is 1 unit; write areas in square units. 6 problems per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key after the problems.
This sheet is one of the versions on the 6th grade coordinate plane page, with its own difficulty choices and its own answer key.
How to teach this
Lengths first, then area. For a horizontal or vertical side, have your child subtract the coordinates that differ and leave the matching ones alone: from (1, 2) to (5, 2) the width is 5 − 1 = 4. Say which coordinate changed before subtracting. For the missing corner of a rectangle, the trick is that it borrows one coordinate from each neighbor, so ask "which corner shares its x, and which shares its y?" The trap on the plotting problems is closing the shape. A child who plots four points and stops has a set of dots, not a polygon, and no area to find. Connect the vertices in the order given, then back to the first. One check: count the grid squares inside a rectangle and compare with width times height. If the count and the product disagree, one length was read from the wrong axis.
Watch for: Kids count the tick marks between two points instead of subtracting coordinates, and land one unit off. The distance from x = 1 to x = 5 is 5 − 1 = 4, not the five marks they touched. Kids plot the vertices and call the problem done without joining them. The area question needs a closed polygon, so the sides have to be drawn, in order, all the way back to the starting point.
Common questions about 6th grade polygons on the coordinate plane
- What kinds of problems are on the sheet?
- Three kinds share the six slots. One gives three corners of a rectangle and asks for the fourth. One names two points and asks for the length between them. One lists vertices to plot and close, then asks for the polygon's area in square units. The mix changes with each print.
- Are the shapes always rectangles?
- The Remember box tells your child to split polygons into familiar shapes to find area, so be ready for figures that need a cut before their area can be found. A plain rectangle such as A (2, 1), B (6, 1), C (6, 5), D (2, 5) is the simplest case: width 4, height 4, area 16 square units.
- Which standards does this sheet cover?
- Three at once: 6.G.A.1 for area by composing and decomposing, 6.NS.C.8 for distances between points that share a coordinate, and 6.G.A.3 for drawing polygons from given vertices. That is why one page holds three kinds of problem.
