How to teach this
Have your child underline the digit in the target place before doing anything else. Most rounding errors start with rounding the wrong place, not rounding the wrong way. A number line from 4.8 to 4.9 marked in hundredths makes "nearest" literal: 4.86 simply sits closer to 4.9. Test for the two-hop habit by asking for 4.46 to the nearest whole and expecting 4, not 5.
Watch for: Kids round in two hops, turning 4.46 into 4.5 and then 5. Round in one step, using only the digit directly after the place you're rounding to. Kids freeze when a 9 has to round up, as in 4.97 to the nearest tenth. The 9 rolls over and carries, so the answer is 5.0.
Common questions about 5th grade rounding decimals
- Does each problem say which place to round to?
- Yes. Every problem names its target (nearest tenth or nearest whole number), so your child practices reading the instruction as carefully as the number.
- What should a rounded answer look like?
- It stops at the target place: 4.86 to the nearest tenth is written 4.9, not 4.90. To the nearest whole number it's just 5, no decimal point.
